Description:
The collection consists of 2 bound portfolios of First World War paintings and ink drawings, presumed to have been created by "JM". The first volume, titled "Sketches of the War--France--Belgium--First Volume" includes the dedication inside the front cover "to my daughter Adele" and signed "JM, 1917-1918". This second volume is titled "A Second Volume of Sketches of the War." The sketches vary from satirical cartoons to more detailed and naturalistic renditions. They are often accompanied by an ironic title and are often signed with the artist's initials, "J.M." The artist's satirical targets include the officers and high command of both combatant sides; the disjuncture between reported and actual events, and the death of civilians as a fact of modern warfare. The artillery cap badge illustrated on the dedication page indicates the artist, "J.M." was with the Royal Regiment of Artillery during WWI. The watercolour on page 61 bears a blue stamp "Vise par L'Autorite Militaire Britannique, British Army." Other clues found in the drawings indicate that JM was an officer.
