1. Ewe fishing village, north bank of the Black Volta River, 1982

Description:
Villages of Ewe families who made their livelihood through fishing lined the banks of the Black Volta River on its northern and southern shores during the 20th century. Viewed here from the south bank, looking northward from Agbegikrom South, is the fishing village of Agbegikrom North. Because their homes were located a short distance downstream from the site of Bui Dam, villagers in both settlements were relocated beginning in 2008 as construction on the dam began. Description:
A village of fishing families established by immigrant Ewe people on the margins of the newly formed Bui Lake, June, 2016. Many fishing families were drawn to Banda by opportunities created as Bui Lake formed behind the newly built Bui Dam. The villages consisted of tightly clustered houses, many with tarp roofs, located a short distance from the newly formed Bui Lake. Banda, June, 2016.

3. Canoe on the Black Volta River, Bui Dam site, 1990

Description:
A canoe belonging to an Ewe fishing community rests on the south bank of the Black Volta River near the Bui Dam site. Prior to the construction of Bui Dam, these canoes were used to ferry passengers between the north and south banks of the river and for fishing. Opposite, a path leads to the Ewe fishing community of Agbegikrom. The mountain behind formed part of the gorge where the Bui Dam was later built (from 2008). Dam Site settlement, 1990.

A water level measurement pole (bottom right) at the base of a path through riparian forest leading to the Bui Dam site on the Black Volta River. These measuring devices were placed when Soviet engineers began laying groundwork for the dam under Nkrumah's government. Description:
Sinohydro, the state-owned Chinese hydropower engineering and construction company, began constructing the Bui Hydroelectric Dam in 2008. Here the river's course has been diverted along the south bank as construction of the dam is underway. The land in the background lays within Bui National Park, a Wildlife Protection Area first established in 1971. Following completion of the dam, the area between the dam and the distant mountain was flooded by the newly formed Bui Lake. Fishing is no longer viable in these downstream areas. 36. UVic student Devin Tepleski with children in Bui, 2009

Description:
Devin Tepleski, University of Victoria undergraduate student in visual anthropology, plays back film footage on a video camera to children from Bui Village. The children carry headpans as they make their way to the river to fetch water. Acting on a request by Bui people, Tepleski visited Bui as part of the Banda Research Project to video-document the village and its people prior to their mandatory relocation due to the Bui Hydroelectric Dam project. Description:
A no-trespassing sign posted by the Bui Power Authority along the paved Ahenkro-Bongase road several kilometers north of Ahenkro identifies "land under acquisition" by the Bui Power Authority (BPA). Electrical poles and wires run along the roadside. The large land parcel under acquisition by BPA has long been home to farms worked by families in Ahenkro and Bongase. 45. Motor-powered fishing boat moored on Bui Lake, 2016

Description:
An outboard motor-powered fishing boat used by commercial fisherman on the newly formed Bui Lake. The Ewe families who fished the waters of the Black Volta River in this area before Bui Dam was built fished from small canoes. Those small boats are unsafe on the lake formed by Bui Dam because of the lake's unpredictable winds and waves. Fishing on the lake therefore requires access to capital that many local fishermen lack. Trees inundated by the rising lake waters are visible in the background. Two photos.
