Description:
A water level measurement pole (bottom right) at the base of a path through riparian forest leading to the Bui Dam site on the Black Volta River. These measuring devices were placed when Soviet engineers began laying groundwork for the dam under Nkrumah's government. On the other side of the river is the mountainside against which the dam was later built, beginning in 2008. View towards north. Bui Dam site, 1994.

Description:
Yaw Kyԑ paddles a canoe toward the Dam Site settlement, an Ewe fishing village on the south bank of the Black Volta River. Canoes like these were used to ferry people across the river and for fishing. In the foreground, a basket sits on the riverbank. 5. Ewe fishing village, north bank of the Black Volta River, 1982

Description:
Villages of Ewe families who made their livelihood through fishing lined the banks of the Black Volta River on its northern and southern shores during the 20th century. Viewed here from the south bank, looking northward from Agbegikrom South, is the fishing village of Agbegikrom North. Because their homes were located a short distance downstream from the site of Bui Dam, villagers in both settlements were relocated beginning in 2008 as construction on the dam began. 6. Black Volta River and Bui Dam site from Bui, 2008

Description:
Standing on the south bank of the Black Volta River near Bui Village, looking east-northeast to the gap in the Banda hills where the Bui Dam was constructed. The area between Bui village and the river was the site of a 19th-century village (Bui Kataa or old Bui). This area was flooded by the rising waters of Bui Lake as it formed behind Bui Dam after 2012. Bui, 25 July, 1982.

7. Hippos on the Black Volta River, upstream from the Bui Dam site, 2009

Description:
Adult hippos monitor the presence of tourists in canoes on the Black Volta River in Bui National Park. Dense riparian forest covers the south bank of the river. The park was established as a Wildlife Refuge Area from 1971 and was home to one of West Africa's eight hippo populations. More than 300 hippos were counted in the park prior to the construction of the Bui Hydroelectric Dam which began in 2008. Two photos. Bui National Park, 12 June, 2009.

24. Canoes and paddlers on the Black Volta River, Akanyakrom, 2009

Description:
Young Ewe fishermen from Akayakrom work part time as guides for tourists visiting Bui National Park. They await a group of tourists making a trip up river to view the park's resident hippo population. Thick riparian forest lines the north bank of the Black Volta River. Akanyakrom was among the villages flooded by Bui Lake as water levels rose behind Bui Dam after 2012. Hippos were driven upstream by flooding and locally made canoes could no longer be used to ferry tourists because of the lake's winds and waves. Description:
Bui Dam was built by Sinohydro, a state-owned Chinese hydropower engineering and construction company. Construction was begun in 2008 and the first turbines became operational in 2013. Here the dam is viewed looking northwest from the newly constructed bridge downstream. Reduced downstream flow of the Black Volta River has exposed the river's rocky bed. Bui Dam site, 18 June, 2016.

Description:
The Bui Hydroelectric Dam reduced the Black Volta River's downstream flow, exposing here the rocky river bed that was once home to a braided river channel. Fishing is no longer viable in these downstream areas. Description:
Sinohydro, the state-owned Chinese hydropower engineering and construction company, began constructing the Bui Hydroelectric Dam in 2008. Here on the north bank of the Black Volta River at the base of the mountain is the cleared site of an Ewe fishing village, Agbegikrom (two views). Description:
A canoe belonging to an Ewe fishing community rests on the south bank of the Black Volta River near the Bui Dam site. Description:
The Ewe fishermen who supplied local and regional markets with freshwater fish from the Black Volta River traveled in locally made wooden canoes. Description:
Standing on the south bank of the Black Volta River near Bui village, looking east-northeast to the gap in the Banda hills where the Bui Dam was constructed after 2008. The area between Bui village and the river was the site of a 19th-century village, Bui Kataa (old Bui). This area was flooded by the rising waters of Bui Lake as it formed behind Bui Dam after 2012.
