- Canoes belonging to Ewe fishing communities rest on the south bank of the Black Volta River near the Bui Dam site. Prior to the construction of Bui Dam, these canoes were used to ferry passengers between the north and south banks of the river and for fishing. A path leading to the fishing village of Agbegikrom on the river's opposite bank is visible (center, right). Canoes like these were used to ferry people across the river and for fishing. - A water level measurement pole (bottom right) at the base of a path through riparian forest leading to the Bui Dam site on the Black Volta River. These measuring devices were placed when Soviet engineers began laying groundwork for the dam under Nkrumah's government. - The Ewe fishermen who supplied local and regional markets with freshwater fish from the Black Volta River traveled in locally made wooden canoes.
