- Standing on the south bank of the Black Volta River near Bui Village, looking east-northeast to the gap in the Banda hills where the Bui Dam was constructed. The area between Bui village and the river was the site of a 19th-century village (Bui Kataa or old Bui). This area was flooded by the rising waters of Bui Lake as it formed behind Bui Dam after 2012. Bui, 25 July, 1982.

7. Bagged charcoal ready for collection, Bui Kataa, 2008
- Description:
- Bags of charcoal awaiting transport to market. Charcoal production in Banda expanded from a relatively small-scale activity to a much larger-scale one over the early 2000s. This charcoal was made on the site of Bui Kataa, an old settlement located on the banks of the Black Volta River near Bui Village. The area is now under the floodwaters created by the Bui Dam. 9. Bui Dam in construction, 2009
- Description:
- Sinohydro, the state-owned Chinese hydropower engineering and construction company, began constructing the Bui Hydroelectric Dam in 2008. Here the river's course has been diverted along the south bank as construction of the dam is underway. The land in the background lays within Bui National Park, a Wildlife Protection Area first established in 1971. Following completion of the dam, the area between the dam and the distant mountain was flooded by the newly formed Bui Lake. - Description:
- Sinohydro, the state-owned Chinese hydropower engineering and construction company, began constructing the Bui Hydroelectric Dam in 2008. Here on the north bank of the Black Volta River at the base of the mountain is the cleared site of an Ewe fishing village, Agbegikrom (two views). 12. Road leading to Bui Village, 1994
- Description:
- The road to Bui Village was a rough track that ran west and north out of Bui Camp, headquarters of the Bui National Park. Bui Village is visible in the foreground of the mountain. The mountain lies to the north of the Black Volta River and formed part of the ridge used to construct the Bui Dam. The people of Bui Village were relocated beginning in 2010 and their former home flooded as Bui lake formed behind Bui Dam after 2013.

13. Large clay pit west of Bui Village, 1989
- Description:
- Two men (left) stand on the edge of a deep pit previously mined by potters from around Bui Village as a source of potting clay. The deep clay pit was used before the mid-20th century when potters were still practicing their craft east of the Banda hills. The clay pit was located along a stream which drained into the Black Volta on its south bank, on the road leading west from Bui Village. The pit was located in an area later flooded by the rising waters of Bui Lake after construction of the Bui Dam. A red-and-white 2 meter photo scale stands upright in the pit to show the pit's depth. 14. Banda-British Treaty, 1894
- Description:
- George Ekem Ferguson, a representative of the Gold Coast Colonial Government, visited the Banda area in December 1894 and met with representatives of the Banda chief at Lawra (later called Bui). Here they concluded a Treaty of Friendship and Trade. Ferguson’s account of his visit is included along with the text of the treaty between "Se Yau" [Sie Yaw Dwuru] "King of the country of Banda" and "Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain…" The treaty lists 24 signatories, including a number of chiefs, headmen and the queen mother. 15. Preparing soup on a wood fire, Bui, 2009
- Description:
- Ama Georgina cooks on a wood fire in the old settlement of Bui. She stirs soup in a cast aluminum pot over a hearth comprised of three large laterite stones. Ama has placed small stones between the pot and hearth stones to hold the pot in place as she cooks. A young boy reaches into a small aluminum pot containing peppers as other small children look on. 17. UVic student Devin Tepleski with children in Bui, 2009
- Description:
- Devin Tepleski, University of Victoria undergraduate student in visual anthropology, plays back film footage on a video camera to children from Bui Village. The children carry headpans as they make their way to the river to fetch water. Acting on a request by Bui people, Tepleski visited Bui as part of the Banda Research Project to video-document the village and its people prior to their mandatory relocation due to the Bui Hydroelectric Dam project.
