101. Hippos on the Black Volta River, upstream from the Bui Dam site, 2009

Description:
Adult hippos monitor the presence of tourists in canoes on the Black Volta River in Bui National Park. Dense riparian forest covers the south bank of the river. The park was established as a Wildlife Refuge Area from 1971 and was home to one of West Africa's eight hippo populations. More than 300 hippos were counted in the park prior to the construction of the Bui Hydroelectric Dam which began in 2008. Two photos. Bui National Park, 12 June, 2009.

Description:
A mother hippo and her baby cool themselves in the Black Volta River while monitoring tourists in nearby canoes. Dense riparian forest covers the south bank of the river. Description:
A 1965 collection of oral histories by University of Ghana, Institute of African Studies researcher Kwabena Ameyaw, who visited several locations in Brong-Ahafo: Banda; Hani and Nsawkaw; Nwase-Branam; and Wenchi. The collection Includes "Tradition of Banda" (pp. 1-15) and "Tradition of Bue" (Bui; pp. 16-18). 105. Gold Coast Government Rules on Regulation of Towns, 1911

Description:
Early in the period of colonial rule, the Gold Coast Colonial Government worked to reshape life in villages and towns by imposing rules governing the layout of towns, the location of town amenities (water sources, toilets) and even in some cases the layout of houses. While these “Regulations of Towns and Villages” were not always followed, this Gold Coast Government document provides insight into the aims of colonial administrators. The document outlines measures to control mosquitoes and requirements to dig pit latrines. It further provides guidance to colonial officials on how to "lay out" new villages as part of a broader "sanitation" scheme. To cite: Ghana National Archives, Kumasi, Reference 483 3633 2919. 106. Family Histories from the Banda Traditional Area, Brong-Ahafo Region, Ghana, 1986

Description:
Based on interviews conducted in 1986, "Family Histories from the Banda Traditional Area, Brong-Ahafo," was originally circulated in 1989 and reissued in 2011. The 1989 brochure included oral histories of 30 Banda area families. The histories of three additional families and photos were added to the 2011 brochure. 107. "Campaign Against Banna"

Description:
Historians of Asante contributed their research findings to a scholarly archive known as “The Asante Collective Biography Project.” In 1979 historian Larry Yarak, whose work focused on Elmina, shared information on “Dating Asantehene Osei Kwado’s Campaign against the Banna” based on Dutch records. The campaign occurred in the dry season of 1773-74 and resulted in many war captives being traded to the Dutch at Elmina as described in this document. To cite: Yarak, Larry. 1979. Description:
An aerial view of Banda area settlements and roads, looking southeastward from the north side of Banda-Ahenkro, district administrative center since 2012 of the Banda District in Ghana's Bono (formerly Brong-Ahafo) Region. The linear range of Banda hills is visible in the background (right, top) with the compact core of Banda-Ahenkro center photo. To the west (right) and north (bottom), Ahenkro's houses are more dispersed than in its compact and older core. The left-hand fork of a Y-shaped road (center photo) is the main road that leads south towards Sabiye and Bofie to Menji. The right-hand fork is the now-bypassed old main road between Ahenkro and Kabruno. The road that extends horizontally across the left side of the photo is the paved road that extends from the Banda junction to the Wenchi-Bamboi road (N12). The clustered villages visible south of Ahenkro include Kanka, Kabruno, Sase, Gbao, Dompofie and Makala. To the west (photo's far right) of the Y-Junction, toward the base of the Banda hills, are light-green rectangular areas devoid of trees. These are fields once cleared for tobacco cultivation and now put to other forms of mono-cropping (single crop farming). To the east of Ahenkro (photo's far left) the angular straight edges and lighter green color of a cashew plantation stand out from the surrounding vegetation. 112. Newly formed yam mounds, Banda, 1982

Description:
Yam mounds have been raised in a partially cleared agricultural field. Small trees have been left to supply support for climbing vines and to aid fallowing after the field has been used for several years. The hard work of forming the mounds using short-handled hoes takes place early in the dry season, after which mounds are planted with yam cuttings during the months of January-February. The vines grow throughout the rainy months of April to August, forming new tubers which are ready for harvesting in late August-September. Banda area, Dec. 1982.

Description:
The soil of a agricultural mound has been dug away to expose a yam (Dioscorea sp.) tuber. The yam vine spreads across the mound and beyond at the top of the photo, its roots surrounding the tuber. A yellow pencil is placed to the left of the yam to provide scale. Banda area, June, 1982.

114. Clay smoking pipe, Site A212, 2001

Description:
A short-stemmed, locally made clay smoking pipe, 2 views (bottom: view from side with pipe's bowl on left; top: view from top). Pipes like this were inspired by those used by America's First Peoples from whom Europeans learned about tobacco. Europeans introduced tobacco smoking to West Africa during the early centuries of trans-Atlantic trade. This pipe's cylindrical bowl has a flared pedestal base which shows signs of wear/abrasion. The rim of the pipe bowl has broken away. The pipe's stem joins the bowl above the base (a "double-angled" form). The stem flares outward toward a flattened lip. The pipe's surface shows traces of overall red slip/paint. The pipe bowl is decorated with closely spaced rows of dentate impression. Soil adheres to the bowl's interior which was not washed after excavation. Photo scale in cm. Site A212. 17 Feburary, 2001.

116. Cashew tree on a Banda area farm, 1995

Description:
A cashew tree (Anacardium sp.) grows in an agricultural field planted (foreground) with calabash (Lagenaria siceraria). Sampson Attah stands near the tree. Calabash has long been grown as a cash crop for local and regional sale in the Banda area. When cashew trees were first planted in the area from the mid-1990s, they were grown singly or in small numbers. A growing shift to cashew farming in the area during the early 2000s was accompanied by the planting of large stands of cashew trees referred to locally as "plantations." Banda area, June, 1995.

118. Motor-powered fishing boat moored on Bui Lake, 2016

Description:
An outboard motor-powered fishing boat used by commercial fisherman on the newly formed Bui Lake. The Ewe families who fished the waters of the Black Volta River in this area before Bui Dam was built fished from small canoes. Those small boats are unsafe on the lake formed by Bui Dam because of the lake's unpredictable winds and waves. Fishing on the lake therefore requires access to capital that many local fishermen lack. Trees inundated by the rising lake waters are visible in the background. Two photos.
