401. Burned features in a metalworking area, Ngre Kataa, 2008

Description:: An area of orange-red burned features has been exposed in excavation units 46N 8W and 48N 8W in an area (mound 6) that archaeologists interpret as a metallurgical workshop. Left, back (west), the body and base of a large pottery bowl (NK 08-522) has been pedestaled insitu. A number of iron bangles surrounded this bowl (cluster A) as part of a large shrine cluster (A-D) that extended into adjacent units. The everted jar rim visible in the north wall of the excavation (upper right) was part of this wider set (cluster B). The base of these clusters was about 20-30 cm above the burned basins exposed in this photo, which were likely associated with metal forging. 402. Excavating a shrine feature, Ngre Kataa, 2008

Description:: Archaeologist Ben Nutor uses a trowel to scrape soil from around a cluster of objects that archaeologists interpret as a shrine feature (cluster A) in a metallurgical workshop (mound 6). An orange flag marks the location of an iron bangle (SF 08-140), the first of four that were found surrounding the large pottery bowl (NK 08-522) seen partially exposed in front of Nutor. 404. UVic student Devin Tepleski with children in Bui, 2009

Description:: Devin Tepleski, University of Victoria undergraduate student in visual anthropology, plays back film footage on a video camera to children from Bui Village. The children carry headpans as they make their way to the river to fetch water. Acting on a request by Bui people, Tepleski visited Bui as part of the Banda Research Project to video-document the village and its people prior to their mandatory relocation due to the Bui Hydroelectric Dam project. 435. Iron bangle, Ngre Kataa, 2009

Description:: An iron bangle (SF 09-148) made from a round iron rod that has been spiral-twisted. Its ends overlap and are rounded. The bangle was found placed on the inside surface of a pottery jar resting next to a pair of miniature iron manacles (SF 09-171), around which were other pottery rims and lids (cluster C). Archaeologists interpret this context as part of a larger shrine feature (clusters A-D) in a metallurgical workshop. The bangle shows signs of corrosion by rusting. Scale in cm. Width: 8.1 cm. 436. Carrying a basketry fish trap, Akanyakrom, 2022

Description:: Mawell Gbadago (left), Dzobo Sebastian (center) & Dzobo Reuben (right) pictured with a basketry fish trap (exa in Ewe) that they made as part of a British Museum Endangered Material Knowledge Programme project to document Indigenous technologies in the Banda area. In his right hand, Sebastian carries a length of coiled stick (afɔtasi in Ewe) like that used to force open the trap body; a bundle of twisted vine used to make the rope with which the fishermen weave the bamboo trap; and a wooden mallet (ɛka fokpo in Ewe) used to pound the vine (adzɔ in Ewe) as they process it into rope. 438. Ma Mnama weeding at farm near Banda-Ahenkro, 1982

Description:: Ma Mnama had a reputation as a successful farmer in the Banda area. Here she uses a short-handled hoe (kagbaan in Nafaanra; pl. kagbɛɛn) to cultivate her intercropped field, located to the east of Banda-Ahenkro, 1982. A 2018 interview with daughter Lelԑԑ Yahͻͻ provides background on Ma Mnama's history as a farmer. A link to the interview is available, below.

Description:: Ewe fishermen Dzobo Reuben (left), Maxwell Gbadago (center) and Dzobo Sebastian (right) stand alongside a bamboo fish trap that they made from locally harvested resources. The trap is oriented in the way it would be placed in the water, braced by two long sticks that would be driven into the river bottom. 443. Weaving the tongue of a basketry fish trap, Akanyakrom, 2022

Description:: Ewe fishermen Dzobo Sebastian (center), and Dzobo Reuben (left) weave the tongue (exa woade in Ewe) of a basketry fish trap. They use vine cordage to secure the bamboo sticks. This portion of the trap is inserted into the woven cylindrical trap body, allowing fish to enter but blocking their exit from the basketry trap. Maxwell Gbadago (right) uses a wooden mallet to pound a vine that has been twisted and dried in order to remove its bark and make it pliable. The resulting rope will be used to weave remaining parts of the fish trap. Akanyakrom, 23 July, 2022.

Description:: Ewe fisherman Dzobo Reuben weaves the top section of a basketry fish trap made of bamboo and vine cordage, securing the trap with his feet as he works. He uses cordage to bundle bamboo sticks and narrow the trap toward its top. In lower rows, individual bamboo sticks are separated by two twists of rope. As the weaver nears the top, he reduces the twist between sticks to one, narrowing their spacing. In the next row he bundles two sticks separated by one twist. Description:: Dzobo Reuben, an Ewe fisherman, holds a vine that has been twisted in preparation for rope making. The vine will be set aside to dry for several days before being processed by pounding with a wooden mallet. The rope will be used in fish trap making. Description:: Dzobo Reuben, an Ewe fisherman, twists a vine that will be processed into rope for use in fish trap making. The twisted and coiled vine will be allowed to dry for several days before it is processed by pounding with a wooden mallet.
