161. Left: Manuel A. Cobos and Dagfinn on horseback, Progresso. Right: Karin, Tony, Dagfinn and Manuel Cobos. The photograph was taken in 1933 and was sent to friends Ruth and Alf Ødegård who, at that time, were back in Norway. The picture does not reveal anything about the great finanical crash which had already ruined both Manuel and his brother-in-law, Rogerio Alvarado.

Description:
Hacienda El Progreso eventually succumbed to financial ruin. Its assets reverted to Lorenzo Tous of Guayaquil. In the early 1930's Cobos and Alvarado, lost the schooner, the factory, the store and the plantations. Tous had no interest in living there or sending others to administer for him: "Soon the great sugarcane fields and the factory were but a memory." Alvarado managed to regain ownership of the schooner which was later sold to the government. In 1933, Cobos had the house and the coffee plantation successfully returned to him; however, coffee prices fell while freight charges on the schooner increased.

Description:
Historic Photo (C. McLean Fraser (1943) General Account of the Scientific Work of the Velero III in the Eastern Pacific, 1931-1941. Part II Geographic and Biological Associations. Allen Hancock Pacific Expeditions 1(2). University of Southern California Publications, Los Angeles. USC Libraries. Allen Hancock Foundation Collection) of the worker's village of El Progreso in the mid 1930s, with pastures and Cerro San Joaquin in the distance. The Repeat photographs were made in 2015, approximately at the midpoint of the main road where it intersects with the road leading to Loma del Consuelo, 0.5m north of Repeat 3.

163. Manuel A. Cobos (4th from left) invites the Floreana party for sight-seeing at the sugar factory. Cobos wears a broad-rimmed hat, riding breeches and a revolver holster across his chest.

Description:
The "Floreana" left Norway in 1925 with a load of cement bound for Ecuador. It reached San Cristóbal in August of that year, where the Norwegian sailors were met by Manuel A. Cobos in his Ford pickup truck. At this time El Progreso continued to produce, with groves, gardens, grazing animals, sugar cane, and a "dilapidated" factory.

164. The Cemetery at Puerto Chico in 1905

Description:
An image of a cemetery on the coast in Puerto Chico was published in Las Islas Encantada o el Archipielago de Colon (Bognoly and Epinoza 1905:129). It is unknown whether this was the Hacienda's principal burial ground. An old cemetery is located near Canon Beach. The modern cemetery is halfway between El Progreso and Puerto Baquerizo-Moreno on the south side of the road.

165. Manuel J. Cobos in Field Dress

Description:
This is one of the few surviving portraits of Manuel J. Cobos, and is included in Las Islas Encantada o el Archipielago de Colon (Bognoly and Epinoza 1905:88) Its origin is unknown, but it was likely taken close to his house, possibly on the promontory to its north side not long before his assassination at the hands of his workers on January 5, 1904.

166. Portrait of Manuel J. Cobos in 1878

Description:
This is one of the few surviving portraits of Manuel J. Cobos, included in Las Islas Encantada o el Archipielago de Colon (Bognoly and Epinoza 1905:145). It is believed to date to 1878, the same year that Cobos returned to Hacienda El Progreso from his sojourn in California in order to resume his operations at Hacienda El Progreso.

167. Manuel J. Cobos' Hacienda House, Hacienda El Progreso in 1888

Description:
This photograph of Hacienda El Progreso was taken in 1888 during a scientific visit by the "Albatross." It shows the back side and balcony of Manuel J. Cobos' hacienda house. The view may be from the West, and from the side of the sugar mill area, as the image is possibly flipped .

168. HRT Fire Tube Boiler 2017

Description:
This intact boiler, one of the two preserved examples, provided the necessary steam required to operate the press engine and other processing equipment. The holes on the end plates suggest that the steam was supplied by a system of horizontal return tubular (HRT) fire tube boilers. Each opening was connected by a horizontal tube to its counterpart on the opposite end. Heat was conducted from the externally-fired dutch oven through each tube via a flue on the back end of the combustion chamber. The multiple tubes created a large surface area for heating the surrounding water within the sealed boiler. At least 114 openings can be counted on one intact boiler end. Deerr (1911:404) calculated that a seven foot diameter boiler with 120 tubes can supply 1800 ft² of heating surface.

Description:
Historic Photo (Rollo Beck G71, Rollo and Ida Beck Collection, Box 40 MSS 036 California Academy of Sciences) of what appears to be the hacienda kitchen in the foreground with the worker's village of El Progreso the background, in 1905. The Repeat photographs were made in 2015 past the intersection and slightly uphill on the road leading to Loma del Consuelo.

170. Water Cisterns

Description:
A large in-ground water retention basin background), measuring approximately 16x9 m and constructed of thick volcanic rock and marine sand mortar walls over 1 m wide and 2 to 3 m high, dominates the northern end of the mill area. An opening at the bottom of the deepest corner of the basin transferred water into a smaller and deeper adjoining water reservoir (foreground) with a metal tube drain imbedded in its west wall. The smaller reservoir is located close to the stone wall with a tunneled flue connected to the smokestack.
