121. Paul Bruun was captain of the Manuel J. Cobos for about 18 months before he started trading with the Norge. The island community was dependent on the old schooner to obtain provisions from the continent. Delays and fuel shortages proved fatal for Bruun, her former skipper. When this photo was taken in 1934, the schooner had been re-named San Cristóbal.

Description:
Products were moved between the islands and mainland on two boats, the “Manuel J. Cobos” and “Josefina Cobos.” Both are variously referred to as a sloop (balandra) or pilot’s boat (pailebote), a smaller double masted schooner. The "Manuel J. Cobos" served as the principal means of communication with the mainland.

123. A selection of alcohol bottle finishes

Description:
Recovered specimens of alcohol bottles dominated the artifacts in the assemblage. The most common general category of bottles from the hacienda excavations were for wine, beer, or liquor, and in a range of colors in greens, ambers, and black. The vast majority were made in turn-paste moulds.

124. Medicine Jar from the Mill Area

Description:
This complete medicine jar was found in the mill area in 2014.The late nineteenth century was a time when patent medicines thrived as modern cure-alls. The rare mention of health care at Hacienda El Progreso was the existence of a “hospital” room inside Cobos’ house.

Description:
This photograph was taken during the visit of the Albatross in 1888 and provides a aview of the worker's quarters directly to the east-northeast of the hacienda house. In the distance can be seen open pastures leading up to Cerro San Joaquin to the right. The plate is used in Repeat Photo #4.

Description:

130. Manuel A. Cobos (4th from left) invites the Floreana party for sight-seeing at the sugar factory. Cobos wears a broad-rimmed hat, riding breeches and a revolver holster across his chest.

Description:
The "Floreana" left Norway in 1925 with a load of cement bound for Ecuador. It reached San Cristóbal in August of that year, where the Norwegian sailors were met by Manuel A. Cobos in his Ford pickup truck. At this time El Progreso continued to produce, with groves, gardens, grazing animals, sugar cane, and a "dilapidated" factory.

Native evergreen Tree Scalesia (foreground), which can grow to a height of 20 m, dominates the highland Scalesia Zone which can extend to an elevation of 400-500 masl. Overgrown patstures can be seen in the background.

132. Colorless condiment bottle and a fragment of a tumbler

Description:
Condiment bottles in a variety of types, and none with labels were common. One kind consists of tall, thin colorless bottles with very skinny necks. Although unmarked, these shapes are typical of “salad oil” or “olive oil" bottles. Published marked examples originated in France during the late nineteenth century, with this bottle shape given in contemporary catalogues as a “Bordeaux Oil” shape.

134. Doll’s head, legs and arm

Description:
A porcelain doll head with black hair and eyes and red lips, and two legs with brown heeled boots, and one plain doll’s arm were recovered in the main midden. These would have been sewn into a stuffed cloth body, and were probably made in Germany,which dominated the global production of ceramic doll parts from 1880 to 1914. The brown heeled boot was a common feature of doll legs from the 1880s onward.

Description:
This specimen is one of 15 refined white earthenware fragments that were recovered with legible makers’ marks. It was made by Barluet & Cie./Creil & Montereau, from Creil in the north of France.

137. Hacienda El Progreso's Bodega at Puerto Chico in 1905

Description:
Hacienda El Progreso sent its products via oxen-drawn cart to its large warehouse or Bodega on the coast at Puerto Chico. This image was published in Las Islas Encantada o el Archipielago de Colon (Bognoly and Epinoza 1905:75). The Bodega was constructed directly on the beach close to a pier with Decauville rails for loading products onto the schooner.

138. The local matazarno tree was excellent for house construction, but trunks of this size are not to be found in Galápagos. Photo is probably of a mainland tree.

Description:
Native Matazarno, a tree or shrub that can grow up to 15 m in height is highly valued for its hard inner wood and preservative properties. It is likely that Matazarno was used from the early years of Galápagos colonization as the main source of timber for construction materials. Various photographs of Hacienda El Progreso taken during the 1888 visit by the USS Albatross show large pieces of Matazarno trunks forming the structures of some plantation facilities, the main house, and parts of the worker’s houses.

Description:
El Progreso occasonally receives visitors attracted to the ruins of Hacienda El Progreso; however, most tourists to the island do not travel into the highlands, and those who do, often bypass the village completely. This tour group of local students from the coast stand at the intersection directly below and to the east of the hacienda house ruins.
