181. Earthen Canal Connected to Large Water Cistern 2017

Description:
A large basin formed by slightly depressed land is located directly to the north of the sugar processing area. The area can become inundated during heavy rains, and may have been connected to the sugar processing area by an earthen canal, portions of which are still visible under the thick vegetation.

182. Inkwell Recovered from the Carpintero Midden

Description:
Two glass inkwells, and a stoneware ink bottle impressed with “ADRIAN MAURIN / PARIS,” were recovered from the main midden.

183. The Hacienda Sugar Mill in 1905

Description:
This image affords a rare view of the entire sugar mill infrastructure shortly after Cobos' death. The view is toward the west from the upper floor of the Hacienda House. The smokestack is barely visible against the horizon toward the middle of the frame. It appears in Las Islas Encantada o el Archipielago de Colon (Bognoly and Epinoza 1905:137).

184. Dutch Oven or Fire Box and Boiler 2017

Description:
The boilers, one of the two preserved examples which is located to the rear at right, were combined with supporting structures that housed externally fed combustion chambers. Variously referred to as dutch ovens or fire boxes they were large enough to completely combust bagasse fuel.

185. HRT Fire Tube Boiler 2017

Description:
This intact boiler, one of the two preserved examples, provided the necessary steam required to operate the press engine and other processing equipment. The holes on the end plates suggest that the steam was supplied by a system of horizontal return tubular (HRT) fire tube boilers. Each opening was connected by a horizontal tube to its counterpart on the opposite end. Heat was conducted from the externally-fired dutch oven through each tube via a flue on the back end of the combustion chamber. The multiple tubes created a large surface area for heating the surrounding water within the sealed boiler. At least 114 openings can be counted on one intact boiler end. Deerr (1911:404) calculated that a seven foot diameter boiler with 120 tubes can supply 1800 ft² of heating surface.

186. 1983 was an extremely wet El Niño year, and two years later Galápagos experienced one of the worst droughts in memory. But Snefrid (82) and Karin (77) on “Pampa Mia” hold their own for they know that the pendulum will soon swing back to normal.

Description:
"Pampa Mia is a little concrete house covered with metal roofing sheets. It is divided into a living room, two bedrooms and a kitchen. Around the house hibiscus and bougainvillea are protected from the chickens and cattle by means of a wire fence....in the Spring of 1985 ... the grass on the pampas was withered and brown. Only hardy guava bushes with their green leaves interrupted the monotonous brown. Snefrid did not know how many head of cattle were still alive. They were scattered over a wide area looking for food and water, making accurate counting impossible. Almost every day they found animals that had recently perished. Maybe 800-900 remained. The previous year they had 1600 animals."

187. Open Grazing Land, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, 2016

Description:
As early as 1832, José Villamil journeyed to the newly christened Archipiélago del Ecuador and its capital Floreana in order to convert the islands into a progressive province symbolically named Asilo de la Paz, with colonies on Santiago, Santa Cruz, and San Cristóbal. Capt. Nicholas Lawson, a Jamaican who in 1830 had explored the islands, may have introduced goats, sheep, and pigs to Floreana and possibly other islands before Villamil’s arrival in 1832. He introduced cattle, horses, and possibly sheep into various islands, including San Cristóbal, Santa Cruz, Santiago, Isabela, and Pinta, in order to take advantage of their natural pastures.

188. Central Mill Area: Terrestrial LiDAR Walk-through

Description:
The central sugar mill processing area lies directly to the west and down-slope from the Hacienda House. Historic mill infrastructure that could not be relocated or scavenged, remains today in various states of preservation. The image here is a three-dimensional LiDAR point cloud representing archaeological artifacts, measured using a FARO Focus 3D terrestrial laser scanner. LiDAR points have been colourized using digital photos of the features and surrounding area collected at the time of the LiDAR scans. Points relating to trees and other overlying vegetation have been removed to more clearly visualize the archaeological artifacts of interest. The animated walk-through shows the central mill area surrounded on either end by preserved HRT boilers. The walk-through circles around the central flue and boiler heating areas which lie directly across from the water retention ponds.

190. Glass Bottle Necks

Description:
The quantity of preserved alcohol bottles in the midden assemblage suggest that beer and/or hard liquor were more popular than wine on the hacienda. However, bottles in a remote place like Hacienda El Progreso were likely reused many times before being discarded.

191. Feral Goats above Hacienda La Tranquila, La Soledad, San Cristóbal, in 2014

Description:
The first known introduction of goats to the islands may have occurred as early as AD 1693. Currently naturalized on three islands and eradicated on another 11, goats are a highly problematic invasive. These feral goats were photographed in 2014 in the highlands above Hacienda La Tranquila, despite declarations that no wild goats were to be found on San Cristóbal.

193. Gun Cartridge Shells

Description:
Discarded gun cartridge shells clearly date the midden associations. They include a “Nitro Club”12-gauge shot shell (1891-1911), a Winchester 30-30 cartridge (>1895), and a Peters 12-gauge shot shell made after 1887.

195. Water Cisterns

Description:
A large in-ground water retention basin background), measuring approximately 16x9 m and constructed of thick volcanic rock and marine sand mortar walls over 1 m wide and 2 to 3 m high, dominates the northern end of the mill area. An opening at the bottom of the deepest corner of the basin transferred water into a smaller and deeper adjoining water reservoir (foreground) with a metal tube drain imbedded in its west wall. The smaller reservoir is located close to the stone wall with a tunneled flue connected to the smokestack.

197. A Possible Comb Fragment

Description:
Various personal care products were recovered in the midden, including two examples of “Murray and Lanman’s Florida Water” bottles,a pot lid matching a “Cherry Toothpaste/Crown Perfumery” lid from London, and two tooth brushes made in France. This specimen may have been part of a comb manufactured of bone.

198. Chatham Island Exports Fine Cattle On The Cobos

Description:
This image of loading cattle on the "Manuel J. Cobos" was taken by Gifford Pinchot in 1929. It is possible that the small stature of Galapagos cattle may have reflected an original founding population of smaller criollo cattle intentionally selected for ease of transport from the mainland.
