73. Map of Zones of Special Use (ZUEs) in the Galápagos Islands

Description:
Zonas de Uso Especial occupy approximately 3.3% of the park’s terrestrial area in the highlands of the four populated islands: San Cristóbal, Santa Cruz, Floreana, and southern Isabela. The ZUEs were recognized by the PNG in 1996 as areas where the park’s management plan permitted uses that were contradictory to the primary objectives of protected areas, specifically ecosystemic conservation and recreational activities.

74. Map of Zone of Special Use (ZUE) in San Cristóbal Island

Description:
The ZUE is designated as an area of Human Space, which includes: Urban Zones of previously privatized areas on the inhabited islands that are dedicated to commerce, industry, and residence; and, Rural Zones in the highlands of populated islands where the best agricultural soils are located. On San Cristóbal , some 93% of the island’s original humid habitat is an agricultural zone

75. Earthen Canal Connected to Large Water Cistern 2017

Description:
A large basin formed by slightly depressed land is located directly to the north of the sugar processing area. The area can become inundated during heavy rains, and may have been connected to the sugar processing area by an earthen canal, portions of which are still visible under the thick vegetation.

Current land use in the Zone of Special Use (ZUE) of San Cristóbal Island (redrawn from MAGAP 2014). The town services a large, 8201 ha area divided into nine additional precincts, some with tiny hamlets, and all with variably-sized farmsteads involved in gardening and ranching.

78. Complete Decauville Rail System wheel, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, 2015

Description:
Two surviving Decauville Rail System wheels, embossed with “Decauville Aine Petit-Bourg IS80,” and found near the ingenio site, are today in the collection of a hotel in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. Traction-powered rail systems designed for transporting harvested intact cane stalks from the fields employed long platform trucks with eight wheels on 20 inch gauge tracks of 14 lb rails with fixed sleepers. Each cart with iron baskets held up to 1300 lbs and was pulled by oxen tethered with long yolks on each side of the track.

80. Modern Mural with Cobos on Horseback Overlooking the Hacienda Water System

Description:
Water was transported from interior highland sources to the processing plant in an elaborate and lengthy system of canals, aqueducts, conduits, and pipes. This modern mural is found on the wall of a local restaurant directly behind the town football stadium showing Cobos on horseback with cisterns, pipes and El Junco in the background.
