153. Great class distinction, racial prejudice, language problems and religious barriers made communication between Norwegians and local residents difficult in San Cristóbal. Upon their arrival in Galápagos, the Norwegian colonists were quite unprepared for these problems.

Description:
Having attempted to establish a Norwegian colony, The colonists were socially ill-prepared for life on the island. "Many of the colonists regarded non-whites as inferior, especially the mestizos (anyone of mixed native American blood) who were in the majority... such an attitude built greater barriers than all the barbed wire stretched across Campo Noruego. Spanish language, primitive schools, an inferior public health care service, Catholic religion—not even a church they considered worthy enough for baptizing a child ." (Hoff 1985)

155. Beer Shipment Loaded onto Trucks, Commercial Dock, Wreck Bay

Description:
Puerto Baquerizo Moreno features various docking facilities, including a commercial dock used by fishermen and for mainland import/export. The bulk of supplies used for tourism are imported from the mainland. Although prices are higher on the islands, energy products are heavily subsidized by the federal government.

157. The Cemetery at Puerto Chico in 1905

Description:
An image of a cemetery on the coast in Puerto Chico was published in Las Islas Encantada o el Archipielago de Colon (Bognoly and Epinoza 1905:129). It is unknown whether this was the Hacienda's principal burial ground. An old cemetery is located near Canon Beach. The modern cemetery is halfway between El Progreso and Puerto Baquerizo-Moreno on the south side of the road.

Description:
Norwegian colonist Karin Guldberg married Manuel A. Cobos in 1930 and eventually gave birth to six children: Dagfinn, Tony, Sylvia, Liv, Wilfred, and Tito. In the background can be seen the Decauville wagons on their rails along the dock at Wreck Bay.

159. The romantic Karin revealed herself also as a woman with great willpower. In 1945 she was overwhelmed with marital problems, obligations as a mother of six, and financial difficulties. She and Manuel separated. With the help of the children and their father, she established her own cattle ranch. In 1952 she moved into the first “Pampa Mia” near Progreso.

Description:
During World War II, Cobos worked on Base Baltra. Soon after the birth of her sixth child, Karin Guldberg left Cobos and in 1952 moved into her cattle ranch "Pampa Mia." Eventually the ranch was relocated at 500 m, at the time the highest settlement on the island.

Description:
In 1900, Antonio Gil established the coastal town of Puerto Villamil and the nearby highland settlement of Santo Tomás de Berlanga on Isabela Island in order to grow agricultural products and export hides of feral cattle, mined lime and volcanic sulfur, and rendered turtle oil.

162. Gravel Quarry, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, in 2012

Description:
The gravel quarry in Puerto Baquerizo lies directly to thenortheast of the airport. The quarried volcanic rock is used for most construction products, and especially in the completion of the modern paved road through the island, completed in 2015. The quarry has been substantially reduced in size since this photo was taken in 2012.

163. Earthen Canal Connected to Large Water Cistern 2017

Description:
A large basin formed by slightly depressed land is located directly to the north of the sugar processing area. The area can become inundated during heavy rains, and may have been connected to the sugar processing area by an earthen canal, portions of which are still visible under the thick vegetation.

165. The Hacienda Sugar Mill in 1905

Description:
This image affords a rare view of the entire sugar mill infrastructure shortly after Cobos' death. The view is toward the west from the upper floor of the Hacienda House. The smokestack is barely visible against the horizon toward the middle of the frame. It appears in Las Islas Encantada o el Archipielago de Colon (Bognoly and Epinoza 1905:137).

166. Dutch Oven or Fire Box and Boiler 2017

Description:
The boilers, one of the two preserved examples which is located to the rear at right, were combined with supporting structures that housed externally fed combustion chambers. Variously referred to as dutch ovens or fire boxes they were large enough to completely combust bagasse fuel.

167. HRT Fire Tube Boiler 2017

Description:
This intact boiler, one of the two preserved examples, provided the necessary steam required to operate the press engine and other processing equipment. The holes on the end plates suggest that the steam was supplied by a system of horizontal return tubular (HRT) fire tube boilers. Each opening was connected by a horizontal tube to its counterpart on the opposite end. Heat was conducted from the externally-fired dutch oven through each tube via a flue on the back end of the combustion chamber. The multiple tubes created a large surface area for heating the surrounding water within the sealed boiler. At least 114 openings can be counted on one intact boiler end. Deerr (1911:404) calculated that a seven foot diameter boiler with 120 tubes can supply 1800 ft² of heating surface.

168. 1983 was an extremely wet El Niño year, and two years later Galápagos experienced one of the worst droughts in memory. But Snefrid (82) and Karin (77) on “Pampa Mia” hold their own for they know that the pendulum will soon swing back to normal.

Description:
"Pampa Mia is a little concrete house covered with metal roofing sheets. It is divided into a living room, two bedrooms and a kitchen. Around the house hibiscus and bougainvillea are protected from the chickens and cattle by means of a wire fence....in the Spring of 1985 ... the grass on the pampas was withered and brown. Only hardy guava bushes with their green leaves interrupted the monotonous brown. Snefrid did not know how many head of cattle were still alive. They were scattered over a wide area looking for food and water, making accurate counting impossible. Almost every day they found animals that had recently perished. Maybe 800-900 remained. The previous year they had 1600 animals."

169. Open Grazing Land, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, 2016

Description:
As early as 1832, José Villamil journeyed to the newly christened Archipiélago del Ecuador and its capital Floreana in order to convert the islands into a progressive province symbolically named Asilo de la Paz, with colonies on Santiago, Santa Cruz, and San Cristóbal. Capt. Nicholas Lawson, a Jamaican who in 1830 had explored the islands, may have introduced goats, sheep, and pigs to Floreana and possibly other islands before Villamil’s arrival in 1832. He introduced cattle, horses, and possibly sheep into various islands, including San Cristóbal, Santa Cruz, Santiago, Isabela, and Pinta, in order to take advantage of their natural pastures.

171. Glass Bottle Necks

Description:
The quantity of preserved alcohol bottles in the midden assemblage suggest that beer and/or hard liquor were more popular than wine on the hacienda. However, bottles in a remote place like Hacienda El Progreso were likely reused many times before being discarded.

172. Feral Goats above Hacienda La Tranquila, La Soledad, San Cristóbal, in 2014

Description:
The first known introduction of goats to the islands may have occurred as early as AD 1693. Currently naturalized on three islands and eradicated on another 11, goats are a highly problematic invasive. These feral goats were photographed in 2014 in the highlands above Hacienda La Tranquila, despite declarations that no wild goats were to be found on San Cristóbal.

Historic Photo (p.85 Ralph Stock (1921) Cruise of the Dream Ship London: W. 174. Gun Cartridge Shells

Description:
Discarded gun cartridge shells clearly date the midden associations. They include a “Nitro Club”12-gauge shot shell (1891-1911), a Winchester 30-30 cartridge (>1895), and a Peters 12-gauge shot shell made after 1887.

176. Water Cisterns

Description:
A large in-ground water retention basin background), measuring approximately 16x9 m and constructed of thick volcanic rock and marine sand mortar walls over 1 m wide and 2 to 3 m high, dominates the northern end of the mill area. An opening at the bottom of the deepest corner of the basin transferred water into a smaller and deeper adjoining water reservoir (foreground) with a metal tube drain imbedded in its west wall. The smaller reservoir is located close to the stone wall with a tunneled flue connected to the smokestack.

178. A Possible Comb Fragment

Description:
Various personal care products were recovered in the midden, including two examples of “Murray and Lanman’s Florida Water” bottles,a pot lid matching a “Cherry Toothpaste/Crown Perfumery” lid from London, and two tooth brushes made in France. This specimen may have been part of a comb manufactured of bone.
