The purposes of The New Republic (1911? - 1984) and The World Journal Vancouver (1991-2016) were quite different: the former was the KMT party newspaper through significant historical periods such as the establishment of the Republic China and the first and second World Wars; the latter was a modern newspaper serving Chinese-Canadian communities on the West Coast.

However, we can see some themes and topics appearing repeatedly in both newspapers in the past century: Chinese Canadians’ continual fight against discrimination and racism, the development of local Chinese-Canadian societies, and Chinese Canadians’ involvement in the events of their home regions and local Canadian society.
