Mr. Hsu: As just mentioned
因为华人移民越来越多
With the increase of the Chinese immigrant population,
而且华人不看英文报
many Chinese don't read English newspapers.
自己有报纸嘛 都是一样嘛
There are Chinese newspapers. The same news, right?.
所以这个商人呢
So the local businesses
也在华人报纸登出来
started to do advertisements in Chinese newspapers.
我们后来经过广告公司过来的
Later, we received them though the advertising agencies.
整版整版的广告也出来了
So many full-page advertisements came out.
所以这个商人是最聪明的
The businessman is the smartest.(For example,)
以前我记得在新民国报的时候
I remembered that when I worked at the New Republic newspaper,
突然来了很多外国人
Suddenly many English speakers came
跑来登广告
to request advertisements.
我说奇怪 怎么会有人登
I thought it was weird.
原来是因为华人买房子
It turned out that (they knew) the Chinese tended to buy houses
都是cash
and all in cash.
他就要登我们的报纸
So they wanted to advertise in our newspaper.
那个还在新民国报的时候
That happened during the period of the New Republic.
后来那个世界日报
Later when it got to the World Journal,
他们老外的东西啊租房子也好
There were many non-Chinese business advertisements about everything,
买房子也好
such as real estate,
什么建筑新房子什么
architecture companies,
就很多
and so on.
所以这个几乎都分不出来
It's almost indistinguishable.
白人也好
No matter whether these were advertisements from non-Chinese businesses
华人的广告也好
or Chinese businesses,
大的广告等等很多
there were many large-sized advertisements.
这个也促成
This also contributed to
我们的报纸的越来越厚
the fact that our newspapers became thicker and thicker.
不过另外华人的报纸也有一个死角
However there was also a blind corner for Chinese newspapers.
什么死角
What is that blind corner?
就是译名 翻译名字
That is how to translate names!
翻译问题是在哪里的
What is the problem?
因为世界日报是台湾的国语版
Because the World Journal used the traditional Chinese characters from Taiwan.
他讲国语的是国语发音的
The pronunciation (and Romanization) is based on Taiwanese Mandarin.
那么《星岛》跟《明报》是广东的
And the Sing Tao Daily and Ming Pao are in Cantonese.
所以广东人不大看
So the Cantonese didn't like to
世界日报
read the World Journal.
那么台湾大陆来的讲国语了
and the Taiwanese didn't like to read
也不看《明报》、《星岛》
the Ming Pao and Sing Tao Daily.
所以我们那个时候就尽量把
So at that time we tried our best to translate and (Romanize) the
翻译的译名啊
names to make sure
国语可以念
they can be pronounced not only in Mandarin
广东人音也可以念
but also in Cantonese properly.
那我们把它折中起来
So we compromised.
所以这个跟当地华人的关系啊
As to the relationship with the local Chinese community groups,
主要是因为这个华人的
because of the strong purchasing power
购买力很强嘛
of the local Chinese community,
所以就是主流的广告商
many mainstream advertisers became
也越来越注意我们的报纸
more interested in our newspaper.
就变成广告收入的主要来源了
They brought our main source of advertising revenue.
