当时70年代80年代的时候 Interviewer: In the 1970s and 1980s, 新民国报和当地其他的 How was the relationship between the New Republic 华人报纸之间的关系怎样 and other Chinese newspapers? 所谓关系其实也没有太大关系 Mr. Hsu: Actually, there was not much relationship 因为刚刚讲的都是都是党的喉舌嘛 because, as I just said, the newspaper was the organ of the party. 所以你有你的主 我有我的主 So, you worked for your party and I worked for my party. 新民国报 华人来说说是右派 The New Republic newspaper, to the Chinese community members, was right-wing, 国民党的报纸 which was Kuomintang's newspaper. The Chinese Time newspaper was left-wing. 那么大汉公报是左派 比较新一点 It was the newspaper of 他是民治党 The Chinese Freemasons, 他是民治党的报纸 kind of radical. 另外还有一个侨声报 There was another newspaper called the Chinese Voice 侨声报是私人办的 which had a private owner, 私人办的 他什么什么党什么派 so that it did not belong to any 都没有 party. 所以那个时候 比如像我这样 So at that time, my press 已经做了电板 I had made the board, 有照片出来 I had photos (printed), 甚至于用传真机传的很快 even my transmission was done by fax machine. 他们两家报纸也无所谓 Neither of the other two newspaper presses cared. 为什么 Why? 他们不懂啊 要花钱啊 They didn't know (the press business). And it cost money. 我是不但懂 自己做 不要花钱 I not only know (the business) but also save money by doing all this work by myself. 老板当然OK了 The boss was certainly OK with that. 只要做出来就行了 Just do it. 对不对 Right? 不过只有一点不同的就是 But there was one thing 大家不谋而合地 that all three newspapers agreed. We worked to create the modern Chinese name of Vancouver – “wen ge hua (温哥华).” 就是要把当时用台山话讲的 雲高華希望改为温哥华 The original Chinese name of Vancouver was from the Taishan dialect pronunciation: “Yun gaohua.” 就现在用的温哥华 The name (we created) is still in use at present. 我就跟咱们两家报纸 (At that time), I talked with the other two newspaper presses 商量一下 慢慢改 We gradually changed it together. 因为雲高華 也是出了问题 But actually there was a problem, 因为雲高華台山话就“wan gao wa,”很像 which was the Taishan dialect pronunciation of "yun gao hua," 很切题 温哥华他们 台山话 sounds very similar to (the English name) “Vancouver.” 读“温”的时候不一样 However, "wen ge hua" is different from the English term. 最后他们就慢慢习惯了就好了 Later, they got used to it. 所以三家报纸 So, the three newspaper presses cooperated 因为我的建议就不谋而合了 based on my suggestion. 大家都改了 We all followed the change.
