And the salary was calculated according to work hours.
我们那个时候 中国人传统
At that time the Chinatown tradition was
都是不算钟头的 是照月薪了
monthly payment, not hourly payment.
如果外面拿到一千块钱一个月的话
So if you can earn a thousand dollars a month outside (of Chinatown),
我们那个唐人街呢最最多拿到八百
in Chinatown, you can get up to 800 dollars maximally.
做得很多的这个厨房工作
Many of these jobs were in the kitchens of restaurants.
那我们报馆呢更惨
However, it was worse in our newspaper press.
我们最多可以拿到六百
We could get six hundred (dollars) at most.
而且六百是检字员拿
And the six hundred (dollars) were the typesettlers’ salary.
就是刚才讲的 全职的
(They were) full-time jobs as I said.
如果学生的话更少
If it was a student,
学生连一半都拿不到
The student earned less than half of the (six hundred dollars).
那么我这个身份清高的总编辑呢
And for me, as the so-called chief editor,
什么都做
I needed to do everything (to run the press).
只能拿到400块钱
My monthly salary was 400 dollars.
为什么呢
Why?
因为检字员难找
Because it was challenging to find typesetters.
总编辑这个只要念过书的
It is comparatively easy to hire a chief editor.
都很容易请
As long as that is someone that has got proper education.
所以很艰苦的
So, it was tough.
不过有个好处就是

We had a good working relationship among the staff.

I was not afraid of being fired.

There were only chances that I fired the boss.
