今天我们有幸请到徐总 Interviewer: Today, It’s our great pleasure to have Mr. Hsu to 就他对新民国报的历史 talk about his experience of working at The New Republic newspaper press. 和新民国报办报的经历做一个讲述我们做一个口述历史的项目 This is also an oral history initiative. 那么新民国报是1911年在 So, The New Republic was published 加拿大维多利亚出版 in Victoria, Canada, in 1911. 徐总您可以开始讲一讲新民国报 Mr. Hsu, you can start. 的历史说起来到现在已经一百多年了 Mr. Hsu: It has been more than a hundred years 因为1911年现在2018年 from 1911 to now, 2018. 一百多年 Over 100 years. 想起来当时也没有留下 When I think of it (The New Republic newspaper), 很多的资料 There were not many documents preserved. 当时的时候 At that time, 因为也没想到说要出版什么的 we didn't expect to publish anything (later). 我在新民国报差不多做了九年 I had been working at The New Republic newspaper press for almost nine years. 当时也是很可怜了 It was a pitiable situation at that time. 我这个总编辑啊手上只有两个兵 As the editor-in-chief, I only had two staff working under me. 一个是编辑老编辑 One was a senior editor, 一个是翻译 the other was the translator. 那个老编辑过世了以后啊 After the old editor passed away, 报馆也没有钱再加 The press had no money to hire another one. 所以其实就是一个将 So, actually, only I and the translator ran the press. 一个兵两个人搞那底下呢就是我们工厂 However, in our factory (printing place) 那边有很多人 there were more people, 不过呢真正的这个检字员 but in terms of the typesetters, 我们叫“手名” we called them “Shou Ming,” 检字员只有两个 and we had only two people. 其他都是学生放假了以后 The rest were students. During their holiday, 他们来帮我们帮忙检字 they came to help us. 一方面父母亲也希望说呢 Their parents hoped that 他们可以学一点中国字的 they could learn some Chinese characters in this way.
